Yuexiu, Guangzhou: The Old City, and the Best-Value Base in Town
Yuexiu holds 2,200 years of Guangzhou in one walkable district, sits on Metro Lines 1, 2 and 6, and costs 30–40% less than Tianhe for the same standard of room. It contains the two best things in the city — the Nanyue King tomb and, one stop away, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall — both ¥10. It also contains Wenming Road, which is the single best concentration of cheap Michelin-listed food in Guangzhou. Stay here unless you are working in the CBD or attending the Canton Fair. The trade-off is honest: older buildings, less English, and a hotel lobby that will not impress anyone.
Where Yuexiu actually is, and why it feels like two districts
Because it is two districts. Yuexiu absorbed the old Dongshan district in 2005, so it holds both the ancient core in the west and a quarter of 1920s Republican-era villas in the east.
Guangzhou runs as one continuous 15km east–west corridor along the north bank — Liwan, then Yuexiu, then Tianhe — and Metro Line 1 is exactly that spine. Yuexiu is the middle third and the historical centre: the old ceremonial axis runs from Zhenhai Tower down through the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall and the old city government to Beijing Road and the river.
The western half is the one in the guidebooks: Yuexiu Park with the Five Rams statue and the only surviving 1,137m stretch of Ming city wall, the Nanyue King Museum, Sacred Heart Cathedral, the Six Banyan Trees and Guangxiao temples, and Beijing Road — where glass panels in the pavement expose stacked Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing road surfaces.
The eastern half is Dongshankou, and almost nobody writes about it. Red-brick villas with arched verandahs, built by returning overseas Chinese in the 1920s and 30s, under banyans — colonised since about 2018 by independent coffee, vintage clothing and galleries. The local saying is 东山少爷，西关小姐: Dongshan young masters, Xiguan young ladies. It is Guangzhou's answer to Shanghai's former French Concession at a quarter of the scale and a fraction of the tourist load.

What to actually do in Yuexiu
Museum of the Nanyue King
An intact 2,000-year-old royal tomb, discovered by accident in 1983, with a jade burial suit and Maritime Silk Road trade goods still in place. Ten yuan. It is the best value in the city and there is no serious competition.
Yuexiu Park and Zhenhai Tower
690,000m², the largest park in the city, holding the Five Rams statue that is Guangzhou's emblem and the last surviving stretch of Ming city wall with trees growing out of it. The Guangzhou Museum inside Zhenhai Tower is ¥10.
The old-city temples
Guangxiao, founded before the temple that renamed it, is a major Chan Buddhist pilgrimage site tied to Huineng — and reviewers consistently rate it above the Six Banyan Trees precisely because it is less commercialised. Huaisheng Mosque, traditionally 627 AD, is a walk-past rather than a visit.
Sacred Heart Cathedral
A Gothic Revival cathedral built entirely of granite — walls, pillars and both towers — between 1863 and 1888 by French architects. Locally it is just 石室, the Stone House. Mass is said in Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and English.
Wenming Road
A 400m strip holding two Bib Gourmand shops, a dessert house open until 01:00 and a congee corridor. The highest-value food street for a visitor in Guangzhou, and one block from Beijing Road's tourist pricing.
Dongshankou
1920s overseas-Chinese villas, independent coffee and vintage shops, almost no foreign tourists. The one district in Guangzhou that rewards aimless walking, which is exactly what the citywalk trend is looking for.

The same money buys a materially better room here than in the CBD, and puts you inside walking distance of the sights rather than one metro line away from them. Two things to check before you book anywhere in Guangzhou: that the property accepts foreign passports — plenty of cheap Chinese hotels do not, and you find out at the desk — and that 'near the metro' means the station you think it does.

Is Yuexiu a good area to stay in Guangzhou?
It is the best area for most first visits. You are inside the historic core, on three metro lines, within walking distance of the Nanyue King tomb, Yuexiu Park, Sacred Heart Cathedral and Wenming Road, and paying 30–40% less than the equivalent room in Tianhe. Stay in Tianhe instead only if you are working in the CBD or need dependable English at reception.
Is Yuexiu or Tianhe better?
Yuexiu for a holiday, Tianhe for a business trip. Tianhe has the malls, the international hotel brands, the best English and Line 3 straight to the airport; Yuexiu has the history, the food and the price. One local criticism of Tianhe is worth repeating because it is accurate: it is hotel-lobby sterile, and could be any Asian CBD.
How do you get from Yuexiu to Canton Tower?
Metro Line 2 south to Haizhu Square or on to Chigang, or Line 1 east to Tiyu Xilu and change to Line 3 — about twenty minutes either way. The nicest approach is Line 3 to Zhujiang New Town, then the APM one stop, because the APM runs the length of the new city's ceremonial axis for a flat ¥2.
What is Dongshankou?
A quarter of 1920s and 30s Republican-era villas in eastern Yuexiu, built by returning overseas Chinese in red brick with arched verandahs, now full of independent coffee shops, vintage clothing and small galleries. Metro Lines 1 and 6, Dongshankou station. Key lanes are Xinhepu and Peizheng Road. It is where Guangzhou's own twenty-somethings go and it barely appears in English-language guides.
Is Beijing Road worth visiting?
For the archaeology under the glass panels, yes — you can see stacked Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing road surfaces beneath your feet on a street that has been commercial for 2,000 years. For shopping or eating, no. It is more shopping than eating, and the genuinely good food is one block off it on Huifu East Road and Wenming Road.
