The Guangzhou Layover Playbook: What 6, 9 and 21 Hours Actually Buy You
Baiyun is 45 minutes and ¥7 from the best cluster of sights in Guangzhou, which makes it one of the better layover airports in Asia. The maths that decides it: you need 30–45 minutes for exit passport control plus security on the way back, and another hour if your connection is on a separate ticket and you must collect and re-check bags. Under six hours, stay airside. Six to eight, do one great meal. Nine or more, do the four-hour old-city route below. Since 5 November 2025 Baiyun is a designated 240-hour visa-free transit port, so for 55 nationalities this is legally available with nothing more than an onward ticket.

China Southern will generally organise a transit hotel room if your Guangzhou connection exceeds six hours and one leg is international — but it is fare-class dependent and you may not qualify if you deliberately chose a longer routing when shorter ones existed. Ask at the transfer desk rather than assuming.
Four hours in Guangzhou, from and back to Baiyun
Clear immigration, buy a metro ticket
Use the dedicated 24/240-hour transit lane if you are on the transit scheme and tell your onward airline at check-in that you are using it, or they can refuse boarding. At the gate you can now tap a foreign contactless Visa or Mastercard straight through — that has worked since 12 October 2025 and it removes the ticket machine entirely. T2 is served directly at Airport North; T3 is not. For T3 take the free inter-terminal shuttle, or from the city ride Line 3 or 9 to Gaozeng and shuttle from Exit B.
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall — ¥10, and the best craft in Lingnan
Line 3 south, change at Tiyu Xilu to Line 1 west, out at Chenjiaci, Exit D or F — the hall is a one-minute walk from its own station. About 45 minutes and ¥7 door to door. Built 1888–93 by 48 leading clansmen, 15,000m², and the reason to come is the Seven Wonders of Lingnan decorative craft: 1,100 brick-carved historical scenes, ceramic ridge sculpture, and double-sided hollowed screen doors. Closed Mondays — this is the single thing that breaks the whole route, so check your layover day first.
Walk 15 minutes to Shamian Island — free
South-west from the hall, or one stop on Line 1 to Huangsha, Exit B. A 0.3km² former foreign concession, ceded after the Second Opium War and deliberately cut off from the Chinese city by canals, with 150-plus surviving European buildings under banyans. Free, open all hours, largely pedestrianised. It is also Guangzhou's number one wedding-photography location, so expect bridal parties on any weekend morning.
Ten minutes on to Shangxiajiu for the food, not the shopping
The arcade street itself is commercialised and repetitive — treat it as the corridor and the side streets as the destination. What you came for is on it and just off it: wonton noodles made with bamboo-pole-pressed noodles, and double-skin milk at Nanxin on Dishifu Road, about ¥15. If you have appetite rather than time, Yongqingfang is five minutes the other way and better.
Start back — and budget honestly
Line 1 east to Tiyu Xilu, Line 3 north to Airport North. Call it 50 minutes plus the shuttle if you are flying from T3. Then 30–45 minutes for exit passport control and security. If your onward flight is on a separate ticket you must collect your bags and re-check them, which adds about an hour — one ticket with the same airline and they go straight through.

The case for booking a layover tour here is narrow but real: it removes the two things that actually go wrong, which are the ride back and the passport queue you did not budget for. On a nine-hour connection with checked bags on separate tickets, it is the difference between a good afternoon and a missed flight.
Four things that decide whether this works
Check the day. Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is closed on Mondays, and it is the anchor of the route. So is the Nanyue King Museum, and so is Bai'etan. A Monday layover is a Shamian-and-eat layover.
Check the terminal. T1 closed for renovation on 7 May 2026. T3 opened to international operations on 22 January 2026 and has no metro station of its own — you use Gaozeng on Line 3 or 9, Exit B, and a free shuttle that runs about every five minutes at peak. Ride-hailing pickup for T3 moved to lot P13, roughly 2km away, which is a genuinely unpleasant surprise at 23:00.
Use DiDi, not a street taxi. Guangzhou's airport and station taxi ranks are where the city's one persistent scam lives — drivers refusing the meter and quoting ¥300–500 for a ride that meters at ¥140–180. DiDi quotes the fare up front, tracks the route and removes the language problem entirely. It runs inside Alipay and WeChat if you would rather not install it separately.
China runs two separate schemes and most English-language guides are a policy generation behind. 50 countries get 30 days visa-free — the UK and Canada were added on 17 February 2026. Another 55 nationalities, including the United States, get 240 hours (10 days) of visa-free transit, and Guangzhou Baiyun became a designated port for it on 5 November 2025. The unilateral scheme is a trial currently valid through 31 December 2026 — it has been rolled forward twice and will probably be rolled forward again, but check before you book a flight into 2027.

Can I leave the airport during a Guangzhou layover?
Yes, if you are eligible for one of the visa-free schemes. Fifty nationalities get 30 days visa-free on arrival with no conditions. Fifty-five more, including US passport holders, qualify for 240-hour visa-free transit provided they hold a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region — and Baiyun has been a designated port for that since 5 November 2025. If you are eligible for neither, the 24-hour direct transit exemption keeps you airside.
Is a 6-hour layover in Guangzhou enough to see the city?
Barely, and mostly no. Budget 45 minutes each way on the metro, 30–45 minutes for exit passport control and security on the return, and an extra hour if your bags need collecting and re-checking on a separate ticket. That leaves roughly two hours on the ground. Spend them on one great dim sum meal near the line rather than trying to sightsee.
What can I do on a 9-hour layover in Guangzhou?
The classic route, and it is genuinely good: metro from the airport to Chenjiaci (45 minutes, ¥7), the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall for ¥10, then fifteen minutes on foot to Shamian Island, then ten minutes more to Shangxiajiu for wonton noodles and double-skin milk. That is four hours and leaves two hours of buffer. Just confirm it is not a Monday.
How do I get from Baiyun airport to the city?
Metro Line 3 from Airport North (T2) to Tiyu Xilu in Tianhe takes about 45 minutes and costs ¥6–8. A metered taxi is ¥140–180 and 45–60 minutes for the 34km. If you are flying from T3 there is no direct metro — take Line 3 or 9 to Gaozeng, Exit B, and the free shuttle, about fifteen minutes in total.
Does China Southern give you a hotel for a long layover?
