Quick answer
WORTH IT The cheapest of China's tier-one cities, and the gap is almost entirely hotels

A Guangzhou resident's summary of the city against Shanghai was three characters long — 差不多, roughly the same — with one exception: hotels, where Guangzhou is genuinely and substantially cheaper. Daily budgets land at ¥300 (~$41) budget, ¥744 (~$102) mid-range, ¥1,826 (~$249) luxury. A good cheap local meal is ¥25. Metro rides are ¥2–8. A 60–70 minute foot massage is ¥48–78. The two best sights in the city are ¥10 each. The one line that breaks the pattern is Canton Fair fortnight, when rooms go 2–4× and sell out sixty days out.

Pick a row from each block. These are checked August 2026 at roughly ¥7.15 to the US dollar.

Excludes flights. Canton Fair fortnight multiplies the room line by 2–4× and nothing else changes.

Two things that affect what you pay

The Booking.com gap, and the 3% fee

Booking.com's Guangzhou inventory is genuinely partial. Several Chinese domestic chains — Hanting, Jinjiang, Home Inn, Vienna, Atour — dominate the ¥180–350 band and are largely absent from it. We run Booking.com links on this site and we would rather tell you that than have you assume the search is complete. Trip.com carries them; we have no affiliate relationship with Trip.com and therefore no link, so go direct if the budget band matters to you.

And watch the 3% payment surcharge. Alipay and WeChat Pay charge nothing at or below ¥200 and 3% above it, on top of your own card's FX margin. Splitting a large bill into sub-¥200 payments genuinely works. Our payments page covers the caps and the ten-minute setup that avoids the ¥200-a-transaction risk-control ceiling.

Guangzhou's weather verdict is unusually clean: mid-October to early December. Rain collapses from 365mm in June to 33–67mm, humidity drops to about 62%, and it sits at 20–29°C. The problem is that those same weeks hold National Day (1–7 October) and the autumn Canton Fair (15 October – 4 November 2026), when hotel rates run 2–4× normal. Late November to early December is the actual sweet spot — same weather, no fair, low prices. No competing guide makes that call.

Questions people actually search

Questions people actually search

Is Guangzhou expensive?

It is the cheapest of China's tier-one cities. A good local meal is ¥25, a metro ride ¥2–8, an hour-long foot massage ¥48–78, and the two best museums ¥10 each. A resident's comparison against Shanghai was 差不多 — roughly the same — with hotels as the one line where Guangzhou is substantially cheaper.

How much money do I need per day in Guangzhou?

About ¥300 (~$41) a day budget, ¥744 (~$102) mid-range, ¥1,826 (~$249) luxury, excluding flights. A sightseeing day using free and ¥10 museums, the metro and local restaurants comfortably lands under ¥150 plus your room.

How much is a hotel in Guangzhou?

¥180–350 for a solid 3★ chain room, ¥400–750 for a 4★, ¥900–1,800 for a 5★, and ¥60–110 for a hostel dorm. During the two Canton Fair fortnights those numbers run two to four times higher and sell out sixty to ninety days ahead — which is the strongest single argument for visiting in late November.

Why are some Guangzhou hotels missing from Booking.com?

Because several Chinese domestic chains — Hanting, Jinjiang, Home Inn, Vienna, Atour — largely do not list there, and they dominate the ¥180–350 band. Trip.com carries them. We have no commercial relationship with Trip.com, so this is simply what we would tell a friend.

What does dim sum cost in Guangzhou?

¥30–60 per person at a neighbourhood tea house, ¥80–180 at the famous old houses like Taotaoju or Guangzhou Restaurant, and ¥200–450 at tourist-strip restaurants for the same four baskets — which is what our White Swan page is about. Add a tea seat fee of ¥3–20 and 5–10% service, both normal.
