Quick answer
WORTH IT The highest-value 400 metres of eating in the city

One block south of Beijing Road's tourist pricing sits a 400-metre strip near Sun Yat-sen's residence holding two Michelin Bib Gourmand shops, a dessert house open until 01:00, a coconut-soup specialist open to midnight, and a lai fun shop featured in A Bite of China. Dishes run ¥15–40. Nothing here needs booking, nothing here is fancy, and this is where the claim that Guangzhou is China's best eating city stops being an abstraction. Go hungry, go twice, and treat 21:00–24:00 as the correct hour for dessert — because in this city, it is.

The other corridors

Where else Guangzhou eats by street

Wenming Road is the best but not the only one. 同福路 in Haizhu holds 熊记鸡粥, 安乐炖品 and 明仔记糖水. 龙津路 in Liwan runs Ronghua Lou (the opera teahouse), 向群饭店, 伍湛记 for 及第粥, 超记煲仔饭 for claypot rice and 开记甜品. 西华路 has durian chicken claypot, 华记石磨 for stone-ground cheung fun and 林师傅 at ¥10–20 a bowl of noodles.

宝华路 is the ice-room street — 顺记冰室 Shunji at number 83, a genuine surviving 冰室, does coconut ice cream at ¥30–40 and closes around 21:00. 东山口 Dongshankou is where Guangzhou's Xiaohongshu generation goes for design, brunch and coffee. And the Tianhe malls — Taikoo Hui, Parc Central, Grandview, K11 — are where the Michelin stars and hotel restaurants live, which is a different budget and a different evening.

糖水 tong sui is a nightlife genre here, not a dessert course. Guangzhou people go out for dessert at 21:00–24:00 the way other cities go out for a drink, and Wenming Road is the spine of that habit. Vocabulary worth having: 杨枝甘露 mango pomelo sago · 芝麻糊 black sesame · 杏仁糊 almond · 红豆沙 red bean · 绿豆沙 mung bean · 龟苓膏 herbal turtle jelly.

Questions people actually search

What is the best food street in Guangzhou?

Wenming Road in Yuexiu — 400 metres holding two Michelin Bib Gourmand shops, a dessert house open to 01:00 and a congee-and-soup corridor, all at ¥15–40 a dish. Shangxiajiu and Beijing Road are the famous ones; this is the one locals send you to.

What is tong sui?

糖水 — Cantonese sweet soups, eaten as a social outing between about 21:00 and midnight rather than as a dessert course after dinner. Mango pomelo sago, black sesame paste, almond curd, red bean, and herbal turtle jelly are the core menu. Wenming Road is where to start.

Do Guangzhou food shops take foreign cards?

Small ones, generally no. Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card bound to it works nearly everywhere; cash always works and has been legally mandatory again since February 2026. Guangzhou's contactless metro gates are the exception, not the rule — a ¥20 bowl of noodles is a QR or cash transaction.

How late does Guangzhou eat?

Later than anywhere in China except perhaps Chengdu. Wenming Road's dessert houses run to 01:00, the chicken hotpot to 02:00, and the ghost market on the south bank runs midnight to 05:00. Dinner at 21:00 is normal, not late.
