Where to Stay for the Canton Fair:
And When to Book

Quick answer
DEPENDS Pazhou if your days are long; Line 8 downtown if you want a city in the evening

Two facts govern everything: fair-period rates run 2–4× normal, and hotels sell out two to three months ahead. Book in July for October, and 90 days out for anything at the luxury end. Typical fair rates: 3★ US$80–150, 4★ US$150–250, 5★ US$300–600+ — against roughly ¥250–400 / ¥450–700 / ¥900–1,600 off-fair. The real decision is not Pazhou versus not-Pazhou, it is proximity against liveability. Pazhou is functional and has, in the honest words of the local guides, zero cultural charm and is isolated when the fair is not on. Staying in Yuexiu or Tianhe on Line 8's route costs less, eats far better, and adds 20–30 minutes each way.

Fair-period multipliers are from trade sources rather than from travellers — the traveller evidence for them is circumstantial, and we would rather label it than pass it off. Off-fair, the same Pazhou rooms drop to roughly ¥250–400, ¥450–700 and ¥900–1,600 by tier. Note also that Booking.com does not carry several Chinese domestic chains (Hanting, Jinjiang, Vienna, Atour) that fill the mid-market here.

The honest trade-off

Pazhou is for the fair, and only for the fair

The local assessment of Pazhou is blunt and accurate: zero cultural charm, isolated when not attending the fair. It is a purpose-built exhibition district. If your days run 09:30 to 18:00 on the floor followed by supplier dinners, that is exactly what you want — the Westin's covered skybridge into the complex is worth real money in October rain.

But if you want a city in the evening — the old-town food streets, the river at 20:00, a tea house at 08:00 before the halls open — then Yuexiu at ¥300–900 with a 30–40 minute commute is the better trip and the cheaper one. Tianhe splits the difference with more international hotel brands and better English.

Transport reality during fair weeks: Line 8 is packed 08:30–10:00 and 17:00–18:30, there is a severe taxi shortage around Pazhou at phase open and close, and DiDi surge is heavy at exactly those hours. Whatever you choose, plan to travel on the metro and outside those windows.

Book early
Book in July
for October.
Genuinely.

Hotels sell out sixty to ninety days before each session and rates run two to four times normal across every tier. There is no late-booking strategy that works during Canton Fair fortnight — the only strategy is being early. If your dates are flexible at all, the week after Phase 3 ends is a completely different city at a completely different price.

Questions people actually search

Questions people actually search

How far in advance should I book a hotel for the Canton Fair?

Sixty days minimum, ninety for anything at the luxury end. Hotels sell out two to three months before each session and rates run two to four times normal. Booking in July for the October session is the correct rhythm, and there is no late-booking workaround.

How much are hotels during the Canton Fair?

Roughly US$80–150 for a 3★, US$150–250 for a 4★, and US$300–600+ for a 5★ during fair periods. The same rooms run about ¥250–400, ¥450–700 and ¥900–1,600 off-fair. Named Pazhou properties: Westin ¥1,300–2,200, InterContinental Exhibition Center ¥1,000–1,600, Langham Place ¥650–950.

Should I stay in Pazhou for the Canton Fair?

If your days run long on the exhibition floor, yes — and the Westin's covered skybridge into the complex earns its premium. If you want an evening in an actual city, Yuexiu at half the price with a 30–40 minute metro commute is the better trip. Pazhou has, honestly, no cultural life of its own.

Is it hard to get a taxi at the Canton Fair?

Yes, severely, at phase open and close, and DiDi surge pricing is heavy at exactly those times. Line 8 goes directly to the complex entrance and is the reliable option, though it is packed 08:30–10:00 and 17:00–18:30. Staying on Line 8's route matters more than staying physically close.
